Historical Background
A newspaper clipping published circa 1977 in the Sentinel Star under Dick Burdette's 'Working' column, this piece finds William Gladden Sr. at age 74, three years before the better-known 1980 feature, still at the same counter in the same wood-frame building he had occupied since 1927. It reveals that Gladden set up his first shop in the back of his Michael Gladden Jr.'s grocery store across the street. William adds that he raised and educated four children entirely from the earnings of this tiny shop. The article continues on page 11-C, which is not present in this clipping.
William Gladden Sr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1903. William attended Georgia Institute of Technology to learn to become a shoe cobbler, which housed a trade school for African Americans in the early half of the 20th century. William returned to Apopka to open his Shoe Hospital on 9th Street in the mid 1920s. William Gladden Sr. operated his business for more than half a century. In addition to his business, he worked as a driver for Orange County School Transportation.
